Working out is only half the battle. The old adage, ‘You are what you eat’, rings true for the other half of the battle for a fit physique. Whether losing weight, burning fat or building muscle mass, what goes into your body will affect your long term goals. It doesn’t take a nutritionist to know that eating junk food will be detrimental to a fit body. With the same rule of thumb, the right food can also contribute to your goals in burning excess fat and building muscle faster. Learn what foods to eat before and after your workout with these tips below.

To Eat Or Not To Eat?

Think it’s best not to eat before a workout? Think again! Research shows you can actually lose muscle if you workout regularly on an empty stomach. Your body draws protein from muscle instead of kidneys or liver, and will ultimately make it more difficult to lose weight. An added benefit of eating right will energize your workout, providing fuel for more intense training sessions.

What To Eat Before A Workout

Sports nutrition expert, Christine Rosenbloom, PhD, RD, says you need quality carbs, lean protein, and heart healthy fats to properly fuel a workout. An example would be whole wheat toast with banana and cinnamon. Whole wheat and fruit provides both complex and simple carbs while cinnamon helps stabilize blood sugar and improves brain function. Another option would be apple slices with almond butter, or greek yogurt and nuts.

What To Eat After A Workout

It’s just as important to eat after your workout as it is to eat before. The Journal of the International Society of Sports Medicine reported that eating or drinking protein and carbs within 30 minutes to an hour after a workout will refill energy stores, repairs and rebuilds muscles and keeps your metabolism burning throughout the day. An example of this would be a protein shake with ½ banana, protein powder, almond milk and hemp seeds. Another example would be grilled chicken with vegetables or a veggie omelet and avocado.
