New Years, New Resolutions!
This past week, chances are you made a bold declaration declaring how you will better yourself this year. Kudos to you! However, the real congratulation comes in about 3 weeks when you are still abiding by those resolute statements. A University of Scranton research study shows 75% of those who make resolutions will allow them to sprout wings and fly out the window just several weeks after they were made. So, the question is, what is the key to keeping your resolution thru to achievement? Below are a few tips in making successful resolutions for 2016!
Keep It Simple
Make small steps towards your goal. Psychologist Lynn Bufka recommends setting, ‘small attainable goals throughout the year, rather than a singular overwhelming goal.’ If your goal is to lose a substantial amount of weight, plan to make lifestyle changes that are easily attainable. For instance, begin with a 15 minute workout a day and plan to cut sugar out of diet 5 days a week. Think of achieving your goal by way of stepping stones.
As you work towards your goal step by step, be sure to make these stepping stones measurable. John Norcross of the University of Scranton says, ‘If you can’t measure it, it’s not a very good resolution because vague goals beget vague resolutions.’ Be specific, and have action steps for you to take to reach success.
Know your weaknesses. Of course Jan 1st you feel invincible- nothing and no one can interfere with your goals. However, Jan 21st may be a different story. Know your temperament and plan to equip yourself through the lows. Be aware of the plateaus that come in reaching a goal. Guard against discouragement and determine to live by resolutions and not feelings!
Grab a few close friends who may share similar goals and work together. Be public with your lofty resolutions. This will help keep you accountable in reaching success. Don’t forget to celebrate your success with your friends along the way!
