Don’t Pick Your Tennis Shoes Based On Color
Wearing the right shoes will help avoid Zumba injuries. Don’t wear the shoes because they match your outfit. Choose shoes you can pivot well in. Dance shoes are made to pivot on the floor, and there’s a lot of pivoting and turning in Zumba. Running shoes, or any shoes with tread can impede movement, and injuries could occur.
Don’t Try To Get Every Move Perfect
Especially if you are a beginner, don’t put pressure on yourself to get every move perfect at first. This can lead to injuries. Dance like no one is watching! If you find you are slacking on arm movements or forget to engage your core because of fatigued muscles, just simply focus on the steps only. Once you have mastered the steps, then add the arms, but always be sure you have proper form with engaged abdominals!
Don’t Slouch During Side Kick!
The most common movement that can produce injury is the side kick- if not performed properly! When students are tired or just not paying attention, it’s easy to forget to engage the abdominals. This leads to bad posture and forces one to hunch over while kicking. Another mistake is to turn your knee in during the side kick, instead of knee facing up toward to ceiling. You can make sure your posture is correct by maintaining a strong core throughout the exercise!
